Geography of Hope

At Gallery 903

Thu, May 03 to Mon, May 28

show

Jennifer Williams is an environmental landscape painter of the Pacific Northwest working in mixed media. Her work focuses on nature’s resilience, cycles of regeneration and our relationship with nature.

Geography of Hope is a collection of landscape paintings inspired by the writer and conservationist Wallace Stegner. In 1960 Wallace Stegner wrote the famous Wilderness Letter which offered a new argument for the preservation of Wilderness. His idea was that wilderness was important beyond the value of natural resources and the greatest value was it’s spiritual resource.

Her latest series was inspired by his writing that rings true today — perhaps more than ever.

"I hope to help connect people with nature so that they not only want to protect it, but also benefit from it. My aim is not for the landscape to look real but for it to feel real, painting not a specific place but the spirit of place, with a message of the Geography of Hope."
